At one time, it was almost a given that moms would be stay-at-home moms. In fact, it was actually a given that women would stay home in general. Now, with more and more women entering the workforce couples often plan their lives around having two salaries and it can be a severe hardship to go from two salaries to one. For women who want to be stay-at-home moms, it often takes a great deal of saving, budgeting and financial discipline to make it happen – but it is certainly possible. Here are 4 great ways to save money in order to fulfill your dream of being a stay-at-home mom.
1. Stop eating out regularly
When you work a full-time job, it’s hard to find time for cooking and meal prep, but eating out can cost up to 3 times what preparing the same meal for yourself may cost. There are a vast number of ways to make quick, easy, inexpensive meals that will help you save money on food expenses. Slow cooker meals in particular are great because you can generally throw the ingredients in the cooker in the morning, have a full, complete, home-cooked meal when you get home and still have enough left-over’s to take for lunch the next day. There is almost no limit to the wide variety of meals you can make in a slow cooker, so you can make a slow cooker meal every day and still enjoy a vast variety of dishes. Of course you don’t have to cut out eating out entirely, but save it for date night or a few special occasions. Eating out may even become a special treat once again instead of the same daily ho-hum event.
2. Cut the cable
With the wide number of free and low cost apps available today ranging from Hulu to Netflix to HBO and Showtime paid apps, it’s easier than ever to save a great deal of money every month on the cable bill. Just be careful, however, because those monthly bills add up and you could end up spending more on apps than you did on cable. Most of them offer month to month subscriptions, however, so you can also rotate which ones you want each month.
3. Do some work online
No matter how much you scrimp, save, pinch or cut back, there are always going to be lean times or times you need money fast. There has never been a better time for stay-at-home moms who need to make money fast to do just that. From photography skills to writing to admin skills, you can market your skills online through a wide variety of platforms. Best of all, with many online platforms you can often get paid the same week you start working.
4. Set up an automatic deposit to put a certain amount of each paycheck into savings
If you already use automatic deposit at your work, you can generally have your employer automatically deposit a certain amount of your paycheck into a savings account each pay period and the rest into a checking account. Money is often easiest to save if it never passes through your hands in the first place. If you can’t set up an automatic deposit into savings through your employer, try doing the same thing through your bank instead.
