If there is one time of year when many parents all around the UK are thinking about buying toys, then it has to be
Christmas.
Children love nothing more than waking up in the morning, bounding down the stairs to the tree and opening all of the gifts that Santa Claus has brought them all the way from the North Pole. But, what is quite important for parents, families and friends to remember when purchasing gifts, is that it is safe for the child.
Here are a few tips to always keep in mind when out purchasing those Christmas presents in these next few months:
- Small pieces – if you are searching for a gift for a baby or toddler, play close attention to if it has all small parts of pieces that come with it. Since the littlest of kids still don’t understand the danger or hazard that might come from small parts, they will naturally pop anything tiny enough right into their mouths.
- Toys with wheels – there are countless little boys and girls out there that might see their older siblings riding around on a skateboard and want one too, but be aware of how fast any of these toys might go. Many bikes, skateboards or other similar toys now have options for younger children that are designed not to go nearly as quickly.
- Moving parts – many toys, especially things like trucks or planes or houses will come with some hinges and moving parts. Always check these to make sure nothing can end up slicing or pinching a child’s skin or trapping something like a finger.
- Straps and strings – just as with moving parts, inspect any toys that come with long straps or strings to ensure that these cannot get tangled around your child while they are playing with it. Generally, toys like this should be available more for older children than babies and toddlers.
Once you go into the toy store knowing what to look for when purchasing some of your Christmas gifts, you certainly will have a better understanding of what presents will be both age appropriate and a lot of fun for the children in your life.
